“We are Britain!” Culture and ethnicity in Benjamin Zephaniah’s novels
Sigrid Rieuwerts, Friday 14.30-15.00

High up on the official list of “authors every teenager should read” in Britain, is Benjamin Zephaniah and yet he is hardly known, let alone taught, at German schools. This paper, therefore, wants to redress the balance and argues that the novels of this British-Caribbean author make ideal reading in the English Foreign Language classroom, present authentic reading material and enhance the pleasures of listening, reading and writing at school. Since Zephaniah is widely regarded as the face of a new, multicultural Britain, my particular focus is the development of intercultural competence through the teaching of his novels.
